When a major AI company announces it's "donating" a protocol to an open-source foundation, the press releases inevitably promise to "democratize" technology and "empower" the developer community. But strip away the corporate messaging, and what we're looking at is a far more complex strategic calculation—one that reveals as much about the future of AI interoperability as it does about power dynamics in the tech industry.

Today, Anthropic announced it's donating the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to the Linux Foundation under a newly created Agentic AI Foundation. The founding members read like a who's who of AI and cloud infrastructure: Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Bloomberg, Block, and Cloudflare. That's an impressive coalition. But the question we should be asking is: What does this actually mean for developers, for competition, and for the future of AI tooling?


What Is MCP, Really?

The Model Context Protocol is essentially a standardized way to connect large language models to external software and data sources. Think of it as a universal adapter—similar to how USB-C aims to work across devices—but for AI applications. Instead of building custom integrations for every combination of AI model and tool, MCP provides a common language that allows any application to connect to any integration.

In a recent interview with David, one of MCP's co-creators and lead maintainer at Anthropic, he explained the protocol's origins. Just over a year ago, the team was frustrated with the limitations of early AI models. "They were really like a bit trapped in a box," David said. "You had to copy things into it... and copy paste things out of it."

The protocol emerged from an internal need at Anthropic—employees wanted to connect Claude to their existing workflows across different IDEs and applications. Rather than building proprietary connectors for each use case, David and co-creator Justin Spahr-Summers developed what was initially called "Claude Connect," then "Context Server Protocol," before landing on the current name (admittedly, naming doesn't seem to be their strength).


The Open Source Gambit

Here's where it gets interesting. Anthropic didn't keep MCP proprietary. They open-sourced it in late November 2024, just before Thanksgiving. The timing was deliberate—give developers holiday time to experiment. The strategy worked. The protocol stayed at the top of Hacker News for three days straight, and adoption was rapid.

But why go open source at all? David's explanation is straightforward: "We care about building an open ecosystem. We want people to connect what they care about to Claude." The more cynical interpretation? By establishing MCP as the de facto standard early, Anthropic positioned itself at the center of AI tooling infrastructure, regardless of which model provider users ultimately choose.

And it worked. Within months, competitors adopted the protocol. Cursor, Sourcegraph, Kodium, Windsurf, and eventually other AI labs integrated MCP. Even OpenAI has collaborated on MCP Apps, a recent initiative to enable richer user interfaces over the protocol.

The question is whether this represents genuine commitment to open standards or strategic market positioning disguised as altruism.


The Linux Foundation: Insurance Against the Rug Pull

This brings us to today's announcement. By donating MCP to the Linux Foundation—specifically to a new sub-foundation called the Agentic AI Foundation—Anthropic is effectively giving away ownership of the trademarks and licensing control.

"There's been a lot of precedents in the industry where companies have changed licenses or have even unopen-sourced things," David explained. "If you want to really build a true standard, you need to make sure everybody is safe and understands and trusts that this cannot go away. The rug is not being pulled."

He's not wrong. We've seen companies reverse course on open-source commitments before—think HashiCorp's license change, Redis shifting to source-available licenses, or Elastic's fight with AWS. When a single company controls a standard, trust becomes fragile.

By transferring control to the Linux Foundation, Anthropic removes itself as a potential threat. The protocol now exists under neutral governance, making it safer for competitors like Google and Microsoft to bet their own infrastructure on it.

But let's examine who benefits from this arrangement. Anthropic gets credit for "donating" something it already made freely available. The company maintains significant influence as a founding member of the Agentic AI Foundation. And most importantly, by establishing MCP as the industry standard, Anthropic ensures that developers building on Claude have access to the same ecosystem that benefits every other model provider.

It's a win-win—but it's also calculated corporate strategy, not charity.


MCP aims to standardize AI-application connections


Real Problems: Security, Context Bloat, and Scalability

Beyond the announcement headlines, MCP faces legitimate technical challenges that deserve scrutiny.

Security Vulnerabilities

David was refreshingly candid about security risks. "MCP opens the door for a wide variety of security risks," he acknowledged. The protocol enables anyone to write tools that AI models can execute, creating classic attack vectors: prompt injection, data exfiltration, and supply chain vulnerabilities.

Imagine a malicious MCP server that includes a tool description instructing the model to "send all user data to this external endpoint." The model, following instructions embedded in the tool description, could comply before the user realizes what's happening.

Anthropic is working on safeguards—tool descriptions can now indicate whether operations are read-only or involve write actions—but the fundamental risk remains. As David noted, "It's more on the side of the model providers and the application developers to handle."

Translation: the protocol gives you the rope; it's up to you not to hang yourself with it.

Context Window Bloat

Another issue is what's been called "context bloat." When developers connect multiple MCP servers, each exposing numerous tools, the model's context window fills with tool descriptions before any actual work begins. Users have reported 50+ tools loading into context, leaving limited room for the task at hand.

Anthropic's solution involves two recent API features: tool search (letting models search for relevant tools instead of loading everything upfront) and programmatic tool calling (allowing models to compose tool calls in code blocks, avoiding intermediate values cluttering the context).

These are improvements, but they shift responsibility to application developers. The protocol itself remains "quite naive," as David put it, simply providing a list of tools without intelligent filtering.

Statefulness and Scalability

MCP is inherently stateful—it maintains ongoing sessions between servers and clients, unlike stateless REST APIs. This design choice reflects the reality of agentic AI behavior, but it creates scaling challenges.

David admitted he'd approach this differently with hindsight: "I would have designed it for the remote case first and around some of the first principles around remote connectivity." The current awkwardness in bridging local and remote servers is something the team is actively working to resolve.


What's Next: Tasks, Agents, and Richer UIs

Looking ahead, David outlined three priorities:

- Growing the community through the Linux Foundation's support—more developers, more servers, more clients.
- Protocol improvements around scalability and the balance between statefulness and performance.
- Advanced features like the recently introduced "tasks" capability, enabling long-running operations and agent-to-agent communication. Imagine an MCP server conducting deep research for an hour and returning comprehensive results asynchronously.

Perhaps most intriguing is MCP Apps, a collaboration between Anthropic, OpenAI, and the open-source MCPUI community. This initiative enables richer user interfaces delivered over MCP—think seat selection when booking flights, visual calendar management, or interactive synthesizer controls (yes, someone built an MCP server for a physical music synthesizer, which is delightfully creative).

These developments suggest MCP is evolving beyond simple tool calling toward a more comprehensive framework for AI application interfaces.


The Bigger Picture: Who Wins?

Step back and consider what's actually happening here. The world's major AI labs and cloud providers are converging on a single standard for AI interoperability. That's significant—and rare in a typically fragmented tech landscape.

But it's worth examining who benefits and who might be left behind:

Winners:
- Developers get a unified integration standard, reducing redundant work
- Enterprise adopters gain confidence that their infrastructure investments won't be obsolete tomorrow
- Major AI labs secure a stable ecosystem that benefits all players equally (in theory)
- Anthropic cements its position as an infrastructure leader, not just a model provider

Questions remain for:
- Smaller AI companies who may lack resources to influence protocol governance
- Users who must trust that security vulnerabilities will be adequately addressed
- The open-source community regarding how much influence founding members will exert over protocol evolution

David's advice to developers is simple: "Build. Build clients, build servers, build it into your products." But also: "If you don't like certain things, engage with the community."

That community governance will determine whether MCP remains truly open or becomes another example of large companies steering standards toward their strategic interests.


Conclusion: Progress, With Asterisks

The donation of MCP to the Linux Foundation is genuine progress toward open AI infrastructure. By removing single-company control, Anthropic has made a meaningful gesture that should increase industry trust and adoption.

But let's not confuse strategic positioning with altruism. This move benefits Anthropic significantly—establishing them as infrastructure leaders, ensuring Claude's long-term integration ecosystem, and generating positive PR around open-source commitment.

The protocol itself is technically impressive but faces real challenges around security, scalability, and complexity. How the Agentic AI Foundation addresses these issues, and whether governance remains genuinely open or becomes dominated by founding members' interests, will determine MCP's long-term impact.

For now, developers have a working standard backed by major industry players. That's valuable. Whether it represents the future of AI interoperability or simply the consolidation of power under a neutral-seeming foundation remains to be seen.

As always, the proof will be in the code—and in who controls it.
